May 31 is the day of remembrance of one of the most tragic pages in the history of Kazakhstan – mass political repression and horrific famine that caused the death of millions of people. Every year, since 1997, Kazakhstan has celebrated the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression. This is the day of remembrance of the innocents who died in the era of Stalinist terror. The harsh policy of the state at that time, famine and mass repression, persecution and forced deportation of innocent people led to significant casualties among the population. Repression affected millions.
Prominent figures of science and culture were repressed: Akhmet Baitursynov, Alikhan Bukeikhanov, Myrzakyp Dulatov, Mukhamedzhan Tynyshpaev, Magzhan Zhumabayev, Saken Seifullin, Ilyas Zhansugurov, Beimbet Mailin, Sanzhar Asfendiyarov and many others.
Over the years of repression, more than 5 million people were exiled to camps in Kazakhstan.
