On July 6, 1994, the resolution of the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan on the transfer of the capital from Alma-Ata to Akmola was adopted. In 1997, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev made the final decision to move the capital. On May 6, according to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Akmola was renamed Astana.

Astana has been celebrating the Day of the Capital since the city acquired the capital status in 1998. Previously, this holiday was celebrated at the city level on June 10.

In 2006, the city day was moved to July 6. On July 18, 2008, the Majilis approved the draft law "On Amendments to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan", introduced by the Committee for Socio-Cultural Development, according to which it was envisaged to establish a new state holiday "Capital Day — July 6". In the conclusion of the Mazhilis Committee, it was stated that this holiday will have historical and cultural significance for the people and be a symbol of the achievements of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
