Almaty, February 1, 2025 – As part of the Digital Almaty international forum, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Development Committee of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan, China’s leading robotics company AgiBot (Zhiyuan Robotics), as well as KBTU, Satbayev University, IITU, AITU, and ALT University. This agreement opens new opportunities for the development of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) in Kazakhstan.
AgiBot is a global leader in robotics, integrating AI into cutting-edge solutions. In August 2024, the company introduced the commercial models of humanoid robots A2 and Lingxi X1, and in December, more than 1,000 robots were produced at its new factory in Shanghai, further strengthening its position in the industry.
KBTU Rector Maratbek Gabdullin emphasized the significance of this memorandum for the advancement of robotics and AI in Kazakhstan:
"This memorandum is a crucial step in developing robotics and artificial intelligence in Kazakhstan. As a leading technical university, KBTU sees this agreement not only as an opportunity for scientific research but also as a way to train highly qualified specialists ready to work with advanced technologies. Through cooperation with AgiBot and other partners, we aim to create an innovative ecosystem that fosters the development of domestic technological solutions through the synergy of education, science, and business."
As part of the collaboration, an R&D center for robotics will be established based on AlemAI – the National AI Platform. The initiative includes conducting scientific research, developing educational programs, and supporting the commercialization of technologies. One of the key directions will be technology transfer, including localizing robot production in Kazakhstan and exploring export opportunities. Additionally, efforts will be made to optimize robotic solutions for various industries and build a modern data collection infrastructure.
The parties agreed to jointly explore promising technologies in robotics, including AI-based automation, machine learning, IoT solutions, and industrial and autonomous robots. Plans also include developing educational programs, seminars, and internships to train specialists in AI and robotics.
Vice-Rector for Social and Educational Work, Ekaterina Smolyakova, highlighted the importance of the R&D center:
"The creation of an R&D center in partnership with AgiBot is not just an investment in technology, but in people. It is crucial for students and young researchers to have access to advanced developments, implement their ideas, and shape the future of the industry. We are confident that this project will become a key driver of Kazakhstan’s scientific and professional growth."
This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening Kazakhstan’s position as a regional hub for AI and robotics. In the future, the center will contribute to the development of startups, the expansion of scientific research, and the support of innovative projects, helping the country successfully integrate into global technological processes.
AgiBot will provide technical support and knowledge transfer for designing and implementing robotics solutions, while Kazakhstan universities will actively participate in joint developments and research. The collaboration framework includes regulatory support, funding for R&D projects, internship opportunities for students, and access to laboratory facilities.
Dean of the School of Information Technology and Engineering, Azamat Imanbayev, noted:
"Collaboration with AgiBot expands Kazakhstan’s potential in robotics and AI. Universities, including KBTU, are ready to actively engage in joint research, development, and educational initiatives. This will contribute to training the next generation of specialists and accelerating technological progress in the country."
The memorandum takes effect immediately upon signing and is valid for three years, laying the foundation for Kazakhstan's development as a regional innovation center in robotics and artificial intelligence.
