Yandex Qazaqstan, in collaboration with students from the Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU), specialists from the Zoology Institute of Kazakhstan, and the Snow Leopard Foundation, has trained a neural network to recognize snow leopards. This neural network not only distinguishes snow leopards from other animals but also identifies them as individual entities, enabling scientists to study these endangered animals more effectively and develop measures to protect their population.
The project was implemented on the Yandex Cloud platform, where experts from Yandex Cloud served as mentors to students from KBTU's School of Information Technology and Engineering — Ayan Amanzhanuly Igali, Mikhail Sergeyevich Ogay, and Ademi Dauletkyzy Sharipova — who participated in the development of a neural network model.
“At KBTU, we teach students the importance of applied knowledge and how it can be used for the benefit of society. This project demonstrates how ML technologies can help solve global environmental issues. We are proud that our students are actively participating in this process. They not only have the technical skills required for such projects but also a deep understanding of social responsibility in protecting endangered animals,” said KBTU Rector Maratbek Tulebergenovich Gabdullin.
