On the 1st of December semifinals of the 42nd team World championship in programming ACM ICPC 2019-2020 among students took place at the Kazakh-British Technical University.

During the epoch of digitalization of all the parts of our life that covers the entire world, such large-scale intellectual contests acquire peculiar importance for young people, including Kazakhstan, where the year 2019 was proclaimed as a Year of Youth.

The Central-Asian semifinals of ACM ICPC was conducted at KBTU for the fourth time and was a part of the international North Eurasian region semifinals (CIS countries, except Ukraine and Moldova) that took place simultaneously in Almaty, Saint-Petersburg, Barnaul and Tbilisi universities.

ACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) was recognized as the most prestigious international IT-Olympiad. The main thing that such competitions encourage to is the development of the young programmers’ abilities to think quickly and make decisions in non-routine situations. For many years now, the success in ACM ICPC is the indicator during hiring process into such leading world companies of the industry like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and others.

The Olympiad is conducted according to the set regulations: a team of three participants is provided with one isolated from the Internet computer, a set of complicated algorithmic problems (from 10 to 13) and 5 hours for their solution. The official language of the contest is English. The winning team is the one that solves the highest number of tasks and gains the least of penalty time.

Annually, about 50 thousand students representing more than 3000 universities from more than 100 countries start competing in ACM ICPC. The strongest teams from the top-listed universities reach the finals.

There were about 80 teams participating in semifinals in Almaty: 40 teams from Kazakhstan, 15 from Kyrgyzstan, 20 from Uzbekistan and 5 from Tajikistan – about 200 young programmers in total. The international panel of judges was observing the process of the contest very attentively.

This time the maximum result was 7 out of 12. The KBTU players managed to solve 5 problems and get into the top 100 teams. And the finals of the championship will take place in June of the next year in Moscow.

Let’s remind you that Kazakhstani HEI’s reached the World Championship finals several times during the 16 years of participation in ACM ICPC. KBTU teams participated in the finals of 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2018 and 2019. Today, the Faculty of Information Technologies (FIT) KBTU graduates – participants of previous years lead in the job-placement in the leading IT-companies if the Silicon Valley (USA), and also successfully work in many Kazakhstani companies in the IT sphere.
