“In the past year, we are opening a new student dormitory with all the conditions for our youth: two new buildings with a capacity of 980 beds, with a total area of more than 14,000 sq.m. and a sports complex. We have done a tremendous amount of work in 10 months. We are the first university in Almaty that will fully cover the need for students’ housing.”
In 2023, KBTU built two new nine-story dormitory buildings and a three-story sports complex, consisting of a gaming hall with stands with a capacity of 198 seats. In the sports complex, in their free time from academic activities, students will be able to engage in sports such as table tennis, boxing, wrestling, futsal, volleyball, basketball, handball and others; There will be a hall for conducting choreography lessons, as well as a gym.
Diana Serikbayeva, president of the KBTU student board:
“We would like to thank you for the efforts that have been put into creating conditions for our best learning and development. We appreciate the support our university provides us. Let the new dormitory be a symbol of progress for our academic family and a home for our students.”
As you know, one of the important areas of the country’s development is providing citizens with accessible and high-quality education, including through the construction of new student dormitories. The main goal is to create modern, comfortable and safe living conditions for students. In Kazakhstan, there is an acute shortage of places in student dormitories, a significant part of this shortage occurs in Almaty. Currently, a Project Office has been launched to effectively coordinate the construction of dormitories in the metropolis. 114 potential investors applied for project support. Akim of Almaty Yerbolat Dosayev said that by the end of 2025, placement locations for 12 thousand people will be created in the city, and another 20 thousand by the end of 2030, which will completely solve the problem of the shortage of hostels.
In this direction, KBTU works on an ongoing basis together with the Akimat of Almaty and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Based on the realities of the current situation, in order to expand the housing stock and provide for all non-resident KBTU students in need, it was decided to build new buildings that meet modern requirements for comfortable living, sports and leisure activities for students.
Simon Nutsuglo, master's student at the School of Information Technology and Engineering at KBTU:
“This event is important not only for the university, but also for students who live here during their studies from different parts of the world. Today is not just the opening of a building, but also a new step in the development of the university. We believe that this building will become a place for uniting ideas, new achievements and a common successful future.”
The dormitory was built on the site of an old building. Construction began in February 2023 and was completed in December of the same year. The new KBTU dormitory building consists of two residential buildings with a total area of 14,320 sq.m. for 980 beds and a sports complex with an area of 2111.1 sq.m., consisting of a games room with stands with a capacity of 198 seats.
The buildings provide: recreation rooms, kitchens, study rooms, an assembly hall with 120 seats, a dining room with 70 seats, laundries, rooms for receiving and issuing bed linen. Each building is equipped with two high-speed elevators, CCTV cameras and Wi-Fi access points are installed, and each room has showers and toilets. There are also rooms for students with special needs.
The buildings were built according to modern requirements. As planned, the hostel was completed on time. KBTU carried out the construction at its own expense; the construction company BI-Group was selected as the contractor through an open tender. All building codes and regulations are strictly observed.
