Times Higher Education: «This year, the world ranking of universities will include more universities in Kazakhstan».

 

On February 16, within the walls of the Kazakh-British Technical University, a master class was held from the world ranking of universities Times Higher Education (hereinafter - THE) for universities from all over Kazakhstan. The master class titled "Kazakhstan in the spotlight - Times Higher Education World University Rankings" brought together the top leaders of more than 50 higher education institutions in the country.

 

Today, Kazakhstani universities are of interest to students from all over the world. The main goal of the event is to attract higher educational institutions of the country to participate in world rankings, increase the importance of scientific research, as well as increase the efficiency of work and develop the status of each university.

 

The compilers of the Times Higher Education ranking single out and analyze the work of universities annually, evaluating them in terms of the quality of teaching, research activities, RI, the speed of message dissemination and innovation. In 2023, 1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions were included in the ranking, making it the largest and most diverse university ranking to date. The world ranking of universities includes 6 Kazakhstani universities, three of them with the status of «reporter»: Kazakh National University. Al-Farabi, University of Satbayev, Eurasian National University named after L.N. Gumilyov.

 

Sayasat Nurbek, Minister of Higher Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, spoke at the opening of the meeting.

«International research is important not only for ministries but also for higher education institutions since the highest quality of education at universities is necessary. It doesn't matter that progress starts with measurement. To move forward, we must determine our current state. We strive to ensure that those universities in Kazakhstan, which are already included in the world rankings, remain in the same place and strengthen their position. Many universities in Central Asia have their processors - Japan, Taiwan, China and so on. They improve the quality of education and direct all efforts towards this. Therefore, now our goal is to become useful and create our national ranking of universities», - said the Minister of Higher Education and Science.

 

Maratbek Gabdullin, Rector of the Kazakh-British Technical University of increased sensitivity of evaluation and analysis of derivative ratings for universities:

«International ratings allow us to evaluate the results of our activities in such categories as publication activity, citation, reputation, and quality of education. It is also important that the assessment reflects the performance of the external environment, thereby a comprehensive understanding of our performance and the environment for healthy competition, which in the calculation is aimed at achieving the highest quality of education. For us, the universities of Kazakhstan, this is especially important».

 

Phil Baty, director of global communications at Times Higher Education, has a high-level masterclass on global ranking methodology, changes in eligibility requirements, and the impact on the education of the UN's international development goals. Also, analytics was presented concerning Kazakhstani universities, which are included in the global Impact Ranking. Lachin Italmazova, commercial director of Great Britain and Europe, regional director of Turkey and Central Asia, singled out that the universities of Kazakhstan are highly rated for «quality of education», «decent work and economic growth», as well as for positive dynamics concerning «gender density».
