The presentation of the new book “Post-Stalin Period in the History of Soviet Kazakhstan: Chain of Ill-fated Reforms and Failed Declarations (years 1953-1991) the author of which is the famous Kazakhstani scientist, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Zhulduzbek Bekmukhamedovich Abylkhozhin, who has been teaching in KBTU for a long time, took place on January 30 at KBTU.

The author refers to the least researched period of the history of Kazakhstan — late Soviet period, in his work. This period needs scientific research by the historians; first of all, due to the fact that several generations that remain the socially-active part of Kazakhstani society of the independence era, grew up and formed particularly during the period between 1953 and 1991; that means that their perception of the time and the collective memory about it might have subjective nature. In the historical memory of some part of that generation, the post-Stalin period is often represented as “the lost paradise”, some sort of “golden century”.  In this regard, the author, who was by no means guided by the urge of some “blackening” or, on the contrary, “whitening” of the Soviet history of that time, tries to consider it from the scientifically sustainable positions.

Speaking about the advantages of the book, we cannot note the use of plentiful statistic data and archive materials. Historical expertise and possession of theoretically conceptual instrument allows the author to recreate the described period in vivid details. As a result, the era of 1953 – 1991 “speaks” with the voices of not only political leaders, but the “silent majority” too, that is of society. The reflection of the main events and processes taking place on the territory of Kazakhstan during the described period: from Khruschev’s “eve of communism” and Brezhnev’s “stability” until Gorbachev’s “perestroika” is found in the book.

The new work of Professor Abylkhozhin will be interesting for historians, economists, sociologists, students, Master degree students, PHD students and everyone, who is interested in the history of Kazakhstan.

The book is published in limited edition in the printing office of Kazakh-British Technical University.
